Laurent Brings International Talent to Women’s Cross Country

…Laurent has come to appreciate many aspects of both NAU and Flagstaff, and most of those things drew her to northern Arizona in the first place.

“I have been hearing stories about Flagstaff for a long time from friends who have trained here for the Olympics and the World Championships,” she said. “They all talked about the scenery and all the great places to run around here.”

Being a part of the women’s cross country team has also helped ease her transition to the States.

“All the girls on our team encourage each other to do well, and I’ve really enjoyed being able to practice with a team on a regular basis,” said Laurent. “In Belgium, I was used to practicing all alone, so the extra encouragement has been really nice.”

Wisconsin adidas Invitational Thoughts from Coach Heins

Thoughts from Friday’s Wisconsin adidas Invitational (where the women finished 28th and the men finished 8th) from Head Coach Eric Heins:

Women’s race:

In what most are calling the most competitive regular season cross country race in history, our young women’s team held their own. Not only are we young physically (three true freshman in the top seven) we are also young as it relates to big meet experience; only Haley Lawrence and Kortnee Burton have ever raced in the Pre Nationals Invite sections. Taking this into account, I am extremely proud of how this group of young ladies competed. In a meet of this caliber you must be able to get out hard and hang on or start out controlled and be confident enough to move through the field. I thought we moved through the field very well and a quick look at the splits shows that as well. Rochelle and Kortnee were both in the 100’s early on before finishing 41st and 67th respectively and only getting passed by a few people over the last half of the race. The same can be said for Caroline, Agnes and Haley as they were closed to 300th at the 1200m mark of the race and finished 161st, 164th and 189th respectively. Looking at the 3k splits, they each passed a lot of runners over the last half of the race and were passed by very few. I felt if we finished 25th, we would have run a good race and if we finished in the top 20, we would have set ourselves up for a national championship qualifying run. We finished 28th and 36 points out of finishing 25th. As well as we ran, in a meet like this where 10 seconds can equal 25 points, I truly believe we left some points out on the course and still have some room to improve. We had a 1-5 split of exactly 60 seconds, which is great, but we had a 1-3 split of 49 seconds. In order to become a better team we either need to have someone step up and be a true #3 runner for us, or we need to have our pack of 3-5 runners all move up to within 45 seconds of our number 1. This team is a good team and we have two more races to show exactly how good.
Our next meet is the Big Sky Championships and coming off this experience we will be ready for the challenge of competing against the defending champions – Montana, Pre-Season favorites – Weber State and the host school – Idaho State. This could very well be one of the closest Big Sky Meets in history, meaning every point will be extremely important.

Men’s race:

We entered this meet as the 7th ranked team on paper and we wanted to finish in that spot. We slipped one spot and finished 8th overall, behind a couple of good performances from an up and coming University of Texas team and a senior laden Princeton team. Once again, we were able to pull off some wins against other potential NCAA Championship qualifying teams. This is the number one goal when competing at these races, but we also have big goals as a team and need to do a better job of finishing races. At the 5k point in the race, we were 5th overall and faded to 8th. This is not typical of the Lumberjacks. Jordan was 23rd and finished 39th (16 spots), Tim was 42nd and finished 66th (24 spots), Matt was 60th and finished 162nd (101 spots). Giving up 141 points over the last 3000 meters is not how we want to end our races. Fortunately John Yatsko and Andrew Belus moved through the field nicely and rounded out our scoring at 99th and 125th securing a top 10 finish. If we hold our positions that we were in through 5k and John is our number 5 man at 99th we finish 4th in this meet. There is no doubt in my mind that we can do that in another 5 weeks. We cannot hang our heads, but continue to work on the things we need to do in order to become a better team and have a strong finish to the season.

NAU Athletics: Cross Country to Compete in National Primer in Wisconsin

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – In following the leadership of All-American Diego Estrada and two-time Big Sky Cross Country Athlete of the Week Rochelle Kanuho, the Northern Arizona University men’s and women’s cross country teams should stack up well against a slew of national talent at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday in Madison, Wisc.”Our men and women competed well two weeks ago in Oklahoma, so we’re looking for another strong showing to back those up,” said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Eric Heins.  “Going to Wisconsin will allow us to compete against, and hopefully defeat, some other top teams from outside of our region.”

Cowboy Jamboree Thoughts from Coach Heins

Thoughts from yesterday’s Cowboy Jamboree from Head Coach Eric Heins:

Women’s race:

In cross country successful teams are made up of those that pack run and those teams that have front runners, with a solid number 5. Our women’s team has become a nice hybrid, with two runners that can contend for top finishes in all of our meets (Rochelle Kanuho & Kortnee Burton). They run as their own two-person pack and rarely finish more than five seconds apart from each other. If we are going to be a successful team, these two have to be low point scorers for us. In the Cowboy Jamboree our number two runner, Kortnee, beat every other teams number two. This will become even more important in bigger competitions, like the Adidas Invitational on October 13. Today we finished fourth as a team scoring 130 points, but of that we scored 115 points from our 3-5 runners. To put that into perspective, the top two teams (Oklahoma State 73 and Indiana 81), scored just 55 and 67 points from their numbers 3-5. In order to qualify for the national championships, we have got to lower the gap between our top 2 and our 5.  We have two weeks of solid training in order to prepare, both physically and mentally, for the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational, We are making improvements, so let’s stay focused, remain confident and take care of the little things that will help us achieve our goals.

Men’s race:

Heading into the Jamboree our goal was to beat at least one ranked opponent from outside of our region. Led by Diego Estrada’s first place finish (second fastest time on this course, behind Adam Goucher), we were able to pull off a victory against The University of Arkansas (current #16). While we can be happy that we accomplished our goal, I believe we need to work on our mental and physical toughness. We have to realize that not everything goes as planned. There will be issues with weather (too hot, too cold, too windy), there will be issues with travel (plane delayed, getting lost, getting to course late), there will be issues with how we feel physically (sore muscles, shin splints, stomach aches), and there will be issues with how we feel mentally (nervous, lack of confidence). But no matter what, when we step up to that starting line, we have to throw those excuses out the window. In fact, we have got to throw those excuses out the window from now on, waiting until the starting line is too late. I challenge each member of this team to “toughen up.” I saw some guys give up a little bit midway through this race. Fortunately, they “woke up” and finished strong, but in a race like Adidas, Big Sky, Regionals and Nationals we cannot have an ounce of “give up” in us. This has got to start right now, we have had far too many pull themselves out of workouts. We need to come to practice prepared to run the workout and finish the workout. Once you quit on yourself, whether it is a workout or a race, it becomes that much easier to do it again. We have the makings of a great team, now let’s take control of our own destiny and make great things happen.

Workout Wednesday with Women’s Cross Country

Yesterday the Lumberjack women were at nearby Ft. Tuthill for their first session of 1200′s this season. I put together a little video to highlight some of our talented ladies. As Coach Heins says in the video, the course starts uphill to prepare the team for uphill starts at both the Cowboy Jamboree (this Saturday) and at the NCAA Championship course in Terre Haute, IN.

The Cowboy Jamboree will be covered live by Flotrack.

Even when it rains, the sun still shines

A few pictures from yesterday’s practice. The late summer and early fall afternoon skies in Flagstaff are often dominated by monsoons. These storms last just a couple hours usually, but bring plenty of water to the dry mountain climate. If you have been to Flagstaff before you know just how good it can smell after a afternoon storm rolls in. Not to mention some of the beautiful views…

A rainbow greeted us back at the track when we returned.

If you look closely you can see it was a FULL rainbow!

Dave Murray Invitational

On Friday the cross country teams traveled south to Tucson for the Dave Murray Invitational. The women placed second, led by senior Rochelle Kanuho’s 3rd place (who won her second Big Sky Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor), and then the men placed third, with senior John Yatsko leading freshman Chris Ganem in 4th and 5th, respectively.

Both the mens and womens teams will be racing closer to full strength on October 1st at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, OK. Last time NAU raced in Stillwater, the women placed 4th and the men were 1st, with Jordan Chipangama taking the overall victory.

A1 Mountain Road

View of the San Francisco Peaks from A1

Last week the mens and womens cross country teams went out to A1 Mountain Road to get in a Lactate Threshold run. Distances ranged from 3 miles for some of the new freshmen and up to 10 miles for the most experienced men.

A1 Mountain Road, or as we like to simply call it, “A1,” is a common workout location. It is located about 15 minutes west of NAU’s campus and offers good footing and little traffic. The dirt road goes forever, with many of the local professional runners coming out here to do their 20+ mile long runs. With its steady incline on the way out, it makes for a great location for progression and threshold runs at about 7,300 feet.

George Kyte Classic

The George Kyte Classic is held at one of NAU Cross Country's favorite training locations, Buffalo Park

On Saturday the Lumberjack Cross Country team held its annual home meet at Buffalo Park, the George Kyte Classic. This is the first opportunity for the new freshmen to show they have what it takes, and for the returners to show that they have put the work in over the summer. George Kyte always has a very exciting atmosphere as everyone anticipates the beginning of the next chapter of NAU Cross Country.

The women got the season started with their 5km race. Senior Rochelle Kanuho led the team to a 3rd place behind University of Arizona and Arizona State with her 6th place finish in 17:48.2. Freshman Lauren Justus finished 10th in 18:11.4, senior Haley Lawrence finished 19th in 18:44.0, senior Lisette Michael finished 24th in 19:12.6 (34 seconds faster than last year), and freshman Kerri Lenihan rounded out the scoring finishing 26th in 19:22.5.

All five scorers were faster than last year’s fastest runner on the team. Look for a different womens team to show up in 2011.

Tim Freriks leads the team with a 2nd place finish

Next up was the mens 8km race. Arizona State brought a very strong team up this year and won the meet by four points, 26-30. After running the first few miles as a pack, junior Tim Freriks pulled ahead from teammates Bahlbi Gebreyohanns (sophomore) and Matt Coloe (senior) and led NAU with a 2nd place finish in 25:55.9 (47 seconds faster than last year). Gebreyohanns finished in 4th in 26:22.6 (1:22 faster than last year) and Coloe was 6th in 26:28.6. Next up for the Lumberjacks was freshman Caleb Hoover finishing in 7th in 26:32.1, the fastest time by an NAU true freshman since Diego Estrada in 2008. Rounding out the scoring was red shirt freshman Cody Reed, finishing 12th in 27:10.8 (1:05 faster than last year).

Next up for the team is a solid month of training that, as Coach Heins put it, “won’t be glamorous.” The next meet will be in Tucson on the 16th at the Dave Murray Invitational. Some of the team will be training through that meet to prepare for the first big meet of the year, the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
